Matthew Emery

Matthew Emery (b.1991) is a Canadian composer who "writes with an honesty which enchants" (Vancouver Sun). His music has been performed across North America (Canada, USA), South America (Honduras), Europe (England, Germany, Scotland, France, Sweden, Estonia, Russia, Spain, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Ireland), Asia and Oceania (China, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea) and has been heard on national television and radio both in Canada and USA. Matthew is the recipient of the ACDA Raymond W. Brock prize (USA) and the ACCC Diane Loomer award for Choral Writing (Canada), among many other awards from across North America. 

Matthew holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of British Columbia where he studied with Stephen Chatman and Jocelyn Morlock. He hold a Master of Music Degree from the University of Toronto, and is a fellow of Melodious Accord with private study from Alice Parker. Additionally, Emery has participated in masterclasses with Rob Kyr, Chen Yi, Jake Heggie and Craig Hella Johnson. He has also attended a residency at the Banff Centre and has studied independently with Richard Danielpour. Matthew is the Composer-in-Residence for the Amabile Choirs of London, Canada, That Choir,  Oriana Women's Choir of Toronto Canada and the Exultate Chamber Singers. Matthew is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre and is a member of the Canadian League of Composers.  He is currently pursuing his doctoral degree at the University of Toronto.

His music has been performed by the Vancouver Chamber Choir, Canadian Chamber Choir, Pro Coro Canada, Elmer Isler Singers, DaCapo Chamber Choir, Winnipeg Singers, music intima, Vancouver Cantata Singers, Ontario and Nova Scotia Youth Choirs as well as the National Youth Choir of Canada. Emery's vocal works are regularly used for solo recitals across the continent and at renowned festivals: VISI, Songfest, Canadian Art Song Project, Canadian Opera Company, and at Wigmore Hall by Leslie Fagan, Simone Osborne, Rena Sharon and Elizabeth McDonald. His instrumental music has been performed by Orchestra London, the Bach Music Festival of Canada and the Summerville Orchestra.

Matthew's music is available on nine commercially released CD's, including the JUNO nominated 'Canadian Reflections' by the Canadian Chamber Choir. Forthcoming, is an album of original choral music to be released on the CMC Centrediscs/Naxos label in 5.1 Blu-Ray surround sound, the first of its kind in Canada (January 2017) entitled "Sing Your Song"

Matthew was named one of the 30 hottest classical musicians under the age of 30 by the CBC radio in 2016.
